shape Introduction

A Clerk, also known as ‘Single Window Operator’ is involved in daily activities of a bank, accounts related tasks and primarily in front desk activities in a bank. The bank clerk job, an entry-level banking role has a lucrative career progression and holds a key roles in the banking resource structure.
Bank Clerks are primarily responsible for customer interaction and support. Bank Clerks assist the customers of the bank in performing simple tasks. Below listed are the IBPS Clerk Roles and Responsibilities followed by the Clerk profile.
  • Managing window counter tasks
  • Handling cash deposits and cash withdrawals, cheque deposits and cash counter daily transactions
  • Taking charge of the receipt of cheques, drafts, dividend warrants and pay orders
  • Ensuring payment clearances
  • Maintaining a daily record of balance sheets
  • Issuing cash receipts and ESI Stamps at counters
  • Maintaining ledger, balance tally, data entry of daily activities of the bank
  • Issuing and Re-issuing debit cards, helping customers with Deposit/Savings/Recurring and Current accounts opening, withdrawal, and closing.
  • Ensuring compliance to KYC (Know Your Customer) guidelines by RBI at the time of initial opening of Savings, Current Accounts and document verification
  • Verification of signatures and discrepancies
  • Typing necessary information about bank
  • Issuing cheque books
  • Passbook updating
  • Marketing of financial products of the Bank such as loans, mutual funds, deposits, schemes, etc.
  • In a regional / Zonal / Head office, a clerk is usually given a department and his job role depends on the department.

A Bank Clerk is the first point of contact for inquiries & guidance to the customers of every bank. All the candidates selected for IBPS Clerk will be on a probation period of six months. As a Clerk you will be trained for either some or all of the following duties in the probation period:

    1. IBPS Clerk: Single Window Operator (SWO) The following duties shall form part of the normal duties of an IBPS Clerk like receipt of cheques, drafts, cash passing and cash payment.
    2.IBPS Clerk: Head Cashier (HC) The head cashier’s duties will involve holding the bank’s cash, bank keys and other such valuables in safe custody, jointly with an officer and being accountable and responsible for the streamlined running of the cash department.
    3. IBPS Clerk: Special Assistants (SA) The Special Assistant’s duties will be looking after and checking the work of other clerks and sub staff and also he/she will be accountable and responsible for running of their concerned department/section.
    4. IBPS Clerk: Universal Teller: (UT) The Universal teller’s duties will be to receive cheques, withdrawal forms etc, update passbooks, verify customer’s account details, signature etc. And explain the features of Bank’s various products and services to customers,
    5. IBPS Clerk: Agricultural Assistants: In addition to the duties of clerical cadre, Agriculture Assistant’s duties will work in the issues related to agriculture.
    5. IBPS Clerk: Advances Clerk:An advances clerk is not responsible for the clients over the counter and works in other areas. The advances clerk role includes activities such as filing loan documents, opening loan accounts, generating disbursement schedules, compiling credit information reports, monitoring NPA's, field inspections, paying crop loan insurance, sending tax (customers TDS and employees Income tax) to government, crediting pensions to government pensioners and doing a list of tasks required by the Regional Office on a regular basis. In most of the tasks, an officer and clerk have to work together.

As a front office representative a Clerk should have the following characteristics:

    1. A Clerk should be amicable, pleasant and courteous. 2. A Clerk should be knowledgeable in banking and computer operations. 3. A Clerk should be knowledgeable of bank's products. 3. A Clerk should have great accuracy and speed in performing the daily activities, as discussed in above sections. 4. A Clerk should be prompt and punctual in providing services.
