The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, first hosted in 1951 in New Delhi (India), is a continental multi-sport event which is conducted every four years among athletes from all over Asia. Until the 1978 games, The Asian Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF) from. Since the 1982 Games, the Asian Games have been organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), after the breakup of the Asian Games Federation. The Asian Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and are described as the second largest multi-sport events after the Olympic Games. In the history of the Asian Games, 9 have hosted the Games, 46 nations have participated in the Games, including Israel, which was excluded from the Games after their last participation in 1974.
After World War II, when most of the Asisan countries gained independence, Guru Dutt Sondhi, the then Indian International Olympic Committee representative proposed to sports leaders the idea of having a wholly new competition, which is known as Asian Games thus leading to an agreement to form the Asian Athletic Federation. On 13 February 1949, the Asian Athletic Federation was formally inaugurated in New Delhi, alongside the name AGF, with New Delhi announced as the first host city of the Asian Games which were scheduled to be held in 1950.
