Indian Army starts 'Operation Namaste' to Combat COVID-19
  • To defeat the Coronavirus, the Indian Army has launched Operation Namaste.

  • Announcing this, Army Chief MM Narwane said that the army has successfully carried out all the operations of the past and will also successfully carry out Operation Namaste.

  • A helpline number has also been issued by the army. Army Chief MM Narwane has announced this himself. The army has set up a total of eight quarantine centres to fight the coronavirus in the country.

RBI Cuts Rates, Allows 3-Month Pause On EMIs To Offset Coronavirus Impact
  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das slashed the key lending rate by 75 basis points (0.75 percentage point) in an emergency move on Friday, to counter the economic fallout from the fast-spreading coronavirus pandemic.

  • The move came after an unscheduled meeting of the Shaktikanta Das-headed Monetary Policy Committee, which was originally slated for a bi-monthly review early next month

Indian government to launch CoWin-20 app
  • The Indian government is set to launch an application ‘CoWin-20’ that will help users check the spread of the coronavirus infection and help curb community transmission by tracking individuals by their smartphone locations.

  • As reported by News18, the CoWin-20 app is currently in beta testing for both iOS and Android platforms and will be launching soon in India.

  • With CoWin-20, the Indian government aims to track the individuals’ personal travel history to determine if at all they are potentially at risk of the coronavirus.

Hydroxychloroquine is Classified by the Government as a Schedule-H1 Drug, Prescription Only
  • The government has notified antimalarial drugs on Schedule-H1, restricting their sale by prescription only and forcing chemists to keep records of such sales.

  • The move is aimed at stopping misuse of the drug which has now been allowed by the government for prophylactic use in High-risk contacts of Covid-19 patients and healthcare treating such patients.

  • According to a bulletin notification issued by the Ministry of Health, the sale of the drug from now on must be in accordance with the conditions of sale specified in Annex H1 of the Rules of Drugs and Cosmetics, 1945.

  • “The central government is satisfied that the drug ‘hydroxychloroquine’ is essential to meet the requirements of emergency arising due to pandemic Covid-19 and in the public interest, it is necessary and expedient to regulate and restrict the sale and distribution of the drug ‘hydroxychloroquine’ and preparation-based thereon for preventing their misuse,” the notification said.

  • “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 26B of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 (23 of 1940), the central government hereby directs that sale by retail of any preparation containing hydroxychloroquine shall be in accordance with the conditions for the sale of drugs specified in Schedule H1 to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945,” it stated.

  • The move comes in the wake of reports of panic buying of the drug by people to prevent chances of catching the infection, even as the government has said its use should be restricted to the specified categories and on prescription as there can be side-effects.

  • The Ministry of Health issued a notice allowing the prophylactic use of hydroxychloroquine as an antimalarial drug for the prevention of Covid-19 in high-risk cases, including health workers involved in the care of patients, suspected or confirmed of Covid-19 and asymptomatic homes. contacts dealing with such positive cases.

  • The notice said that health workers under prophylaxis should self-monitor their health and inform authorities if they become symptomatic. Similarly, high-risk domestic contacts of any positive cases have been advised to remain in quarantine at home while receiving prophylactic therapy.

As per Union Health Ministry, there are total 166 confirmed coronavirus cases in India which includes 141 Indians and 25 foreign nationals. Fifteen have been discharged, while three have died.
