Swiss voters reject plan to curb urban sprawl

Pakistan government not to remove Nawaz Sharif's name from Exit Control List

  • The Pakistan government has rejected former PM Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Mohammad Safdar's requests seeking removal of their names from the Exit Control List (ECL), which prevents them from flying abroad.

  • The decision to place the names of the trio on ECL was taken in August last year during a meeting chaired by PM Imran Khan.

India gets its first four Chinook heavy-lift helicopters

  • Aerospace company Boeing announced the arrival of the first four CH-47F (I) Chinooks for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at the Mundra Port in Gujarat.

  • India has procured 15 of these helicopters from the United States. These helicopters will be ferried to Chandigarh, where they will be formally inducted in the IAF later this year.
Health Ministry has apprised 8 medical equipment as ‘drugs’
Key Highlights:

  • In a proposal to modulate diagnostic and medical device in India, the Health Ministry has notified 8 medical equipment, comprising of all implantable devices, as “Drugs” under section 3 of the ‘Drugs and Cosmetics Act’ with effect from April 1, 2020.

  • The Equipments comprise of CT scan, MRI equipment, defibrillators, dialysis machine, PET equipment, X-ray machine, bone marrow cell separator and all implantable medical devices.

  • This step is important for safety of patients as all these equipment will come under regulatory framework.

  • Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), a national medical device regulator is meanwhile working to make way to regulate the sale and use of medical devices.
Centre allocates Rs 59 crore for Asiatic Lion conservation in Gujarat’s Gir

  • Lions, identified as one of the endangered species by the government, the Ministry of Environment launched a three-year Asiatic Lion Conservation Project in collaboration with the state of Gujarat.

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) allocated Rs 59 crores, which will focus on better management of the lion habitat, disease control and veterinary care for them.

  • Gujarat government also implemented Rs 80 crore that will be spent on specialised veterinary hospitals and full fledged ambulances for lions.
Ladakh declared Jammu & Kashmir’s third administrative division

  • The Jammu & Kashmir Government declared Ladakh as the third administrative division of the state. An order issued by Governor Satya Pal Malik‘s administration said, “The Government has approved the creation of a separated administrative/revenue division of Ladakh”.

  • The division will comprise Leh and Kargil districts, with Leh as the division’s headquarters.

  • The creation of two posts of Divisional Commissioner and Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been sanctioned for the new division.
Got 10% EWS quota without altering reservation system: PM

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said his government brought the 10% reservation bill for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of the general category without altering the existing reservation system.

  • Addressing a Tamil Nadu rally, he dared the Opposition to give him "one instance" where the BJP had altered the social justice system. He also unveiled several development projects in the state.

Bank of Baroda employee steals ₹29.5 lakh from 18 deposits, arrested

  • A Bank of Baroda official named Niket Kumar has been arrested for allegedly stealing ₹29.5 lakh from customers' 18 fixed and recurring deposits at Colaba branch of the bank in Mumbai.

  • Kumar transferred the amount to his friend's account between 2015-17. The embezzlement was discovered when a customer claimed his fixed deposit and found the amount was missing.
Forex reserves rises USD 2.06 billion

Deposits in Jan Dhan accounts set to cross ₹90,000 cr: Govt

  • The Finance Ministry has said The total amount of deposits in Jan Dhan accounts is set to cross ₹90,000 crore.

  • The deposits, which have been steadily rising since March 2017, it stated that already reached nearly ₹89, 258 crore as on January 30. Over 34 crore accounts have been opened under the scheme so far, with an average deposit of ₹2,615.

Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR), indigenously developed missile system successfully flight tested in Odisha

Key Highlights:

  • The second indigenously developed ‘Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet’ (SFDR), propulsion-based missile system was successfully flight tested from ITR, Chandipur, Odisha, by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

  • Unlike conventional rockets that carry propellant and oxidizer, Ramjet uses the air as an oxidizer just like a jet engine, and hence, the weight of the fuel required is eliminated.

  • SFDR propulsion is designed in such a way that it allows for an up and down throttling which further lets the missile to amplify its speed until it reached the terminal phase of flight. The speed increases until the point when sharp turns are required to search for highly manoeuvring targets.

  • Defence Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated DRDO and associated team members for the stupendous mission.
