33-foot tunnel to smuggle drugs found near US-Mexico border

  • Mexican authorities have discovered what they believe to be a 33-foot-long tunnel used to smuggle drugs into the US.

  • The discovery was made in Nogales, a city divided by the US-Mexico border. At least 250 drug tunnels have been built connecting Mexico's Sonora state with the US state of Arizona since 1990, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
Taliban kill more than 30 members of Afghan security forces and militias

  • The Taliban launched a series of attacks on security checkpoints in four Afghan provinces early, killing 32 members of the security forces and pro-government militias, provincial officials said.

  • Both sides in Afghanistan’s 17-year war have kept up attacks this winter, with the Taliban inflicting a heavy toll on government forces, and the U.S. military and their government allies killing Taliban field commanders with air strikes.

India’s longest single lane steel cable suspension bridge opens in Arunachal Pradesh

  • Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated India’s longest 300-meter single- lane steel cable suspension bridge over Siang River in Upper Siang district of state bordering China.

  • The suspension bridge, also known as Byorung Bridge was built at a cost of Rs 4,843 crore and funded by the ministry of development of North Eastern Region under Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources scheme.

  • It will reduce the distance from Yingkiong to Tuting town by almost 40 km. The earlier road length was 192 km.

  • Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the newly inaugurated bridge will benefit about 20,000 people residing on both sides of the bank of Siang River and will boost military preparedness.
5-Judge Constitution Bench to hear Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid Case

  • The case came in front of the 5 judge committee set by Our chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. The five members are as follows Justice Ranjan gogoi, SA Bobde,NV Raman,Uday U Lalit and DY Chandrachud.

  • The head of the committee is the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. The committee was set to decide the timing of the hearing but again it had to be postponed tojanurary 29 th as one of the member Uday U Lalit rescued himself from the case. Justice Ranjan Gogoi mentioned that this case will come infront of the court with the new members reformed.
Bureau of Energy Efficiency and CPWD signed MoU for 5 years on promoting energy efficiency in buildings

  • The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in building energy efficiency for five years.

  • The MOU was signed by Shri Abhay Bakre, Director General, BEE and Shri Prabhakar Singh, Director General, CPWD.

  • According to the MOU, BEE and CPWD will cooperate on promoting designs and construction of Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) compliant new buildings, star rating of CPWD managed buildings across the country with no registration or renewal fee, awareness on energy efficiency in building sector and support for capacity building of CPWD officials in ECBC.

  • This MOU was in line with Government of India’s vision for achieving energy security, economic growth and environmental sustainability.
4th Edition of Raisina Dialogue held in New Delhi

  • 4th Edition of Raisina Dialogue was organized by Ministry of External Affairs in partnership with Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi. The Theme of the Dialogue was “A World Reorder: New Geometries; Fluid Partnerships; Uncertain Outcomes”.

  • The Raisina Dialogue whose first edition was held in 2015 is India’s flagship annual geopolitical and geostrategic conference.

  • 36 years old boxer, M C Mary Kom attained the first position in the latest ranking released by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) in the Light Fly 45-48 kilograms category with 1700 points.

  • Ukraine’s Hanna Okhoto ranked number 2 in the ranking released by AIBA with 1100 points.

  • Mary Kom will have to jump to 51 kg category in order to participate in 2020 Olympics because 48 kg Category is not included in the Olympics yet.

  • Mary Kom has already achieved the feat to become the first woman boxer to win six world championship.
