Red Cross appeals for information on three staff missing in Syria since 2013

  • The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) appealed for information on the whereabouts of three employees abducted in Syria more than five years ago and last known to have been held by Islamic State.

  • A tornado touched down and spun toward Enigma, Georgia, after 17 twisters were reported and earlier on Sunday across the South from Texas to Alabama.

  • Egypt`s parliament will vote on constitutional amendments including an extension to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi`s current four-year-term.

  • Proposed constitutional amendments had previously suggested that Sisi would be allowed to seek two new six-year terms after his current one expires in 2022.

  • But according to a recent draft seen, those latest amendments could allow Sisi to stay in power until 2030 by extending his current term by two more years and allowing him to run once again in 2024.
Sudan protesters demand civilian rule, military council says ready to comply

  • Sudan`s main protest group demanded the immediate handover of power to a civilian transitional government, saying it would keep up the street demonstrations which ousted former President Omar al-Bashir last week to achieve its aims.

  • The Sudanese Professionals` Association (SPA) called for the establishment of a transitional council which would be protected by the armed forces, adding it would exert "all forms of peaceful pressure to achieve the objectives of the revolution".

  • The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) ban on the release of the film Narendra Modi biopic.

  • The plea was filed by the producers of the biopic after the poll panel had passed an order on April 10 banning the screening of the Narendra Modi biopic during the ongoing Lok Sabha poll, citing the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

  • The apex court on Friday agreed to hear the matter after the producers raised issues related to fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression in their petition.

Three Naxals, one CRPF jawan killed in Jharkhand encounter

  • Three Maoists and a CRPF jawan were killed in an encounter in Jharkhand's Giridih district.

  • They said the encounter between the two sides took place around today 6 am in the forests of Belbha Ghat area of the district when troops of the 7th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were undertaking operations.

  • Three bodies of Maoists along with an AK-47 Rifle, three bullet magazines and four pipe bombs have been recovered from the encounter site till now.

  • While digital payments overall have been growing strongly, people are changing the way they transact, choosing bank-to-bank methods such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) over other instruments such as e-wallets.

  • Data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and some industry players from April 2018 to March 2019 shows that not only is the UPI platform outperforming e-wallets in terms of the value of transactions done, but it is also eating away at e-wallets’ market share in specific areas such as person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions.

  • Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, a native of the temple City, became the first Indian to be appointed Chair of International Hockey Federation (FIH) Health and Safety Committee by the world governing body, Hockey India (HI). He will serve a two-year cycle lasting until 2020.

  • In 2009, he joined the Indian hockey team and has co-occurred with the team in the events such as Men’s Hockey World Cup (all in 2010),Sultan Azlan Shah Cup (2009, 2010), Asian Games, CWG, and Asian Champions Trophy (2012).

  • At present, Dr Nayak is with the Sports Injury Centre, as specialist on deputation (Sports Medicine), Safdarjung Hospital.
