US Senate votes to end support for Yemen war, defying Trump

  • The US Senate, defying Donald Trump's foreign policy and his alliance with Saudi Arabia, voted on to end support the Saudi-led war effort in Yemen.

  • Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled US Senate approved a historic curtailment of presidential war powers that directs Trump to remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities in or affecting the Republic of Yemen within 30 days.

  • The Senate vote was 54 to 46, with seven Republicans defying the president and aligning with the Democrats. The text will now move to the Democrat-led House of Representatives which is likely to pass the latest effort.

  • However, the White House has threatened a veto, calling the measure "flawed" and saying it would harm bilateral relationships in the region and hurt the US’s ability to fight extremism.

  • The motion’s full passage would set a historic marker as it would be the first measure passed by Congress to invoke the 1973 War Powers Resolution to directly curtail a president's use of military powers.
WHO says Ebola area contained but Congo needs long-term support

  • The Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo is now concentrated in two areas and could be stopped by September, but the world must tackle Congo`s broader crisis to make it count.

  • The outbreak is the second worst in history, has killed 584 people in a region beset by violence and poverty, but a rapid international response has so far stopped the disease spreading into neighbouring countries.

Indian researchers collaborate with University of Birmingham to resolve issues of air pollution in Delhi

  • Experts from the University of Birmingham and policy makers and researchers from India announced a collaboration to jointly develop strategies to resolve health, social and economic issues linked to air pollution in Delhi.

  • Delegates at a two-day workshop, convened by experts of the University of Birmingham and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, called for air quality metrics to be incorporated into several of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) Good Health and Well-being.

  • The experts recommended that air pollution should be treated as a disaster, in the same way as natural events such as earthquakes and forest fires and also called for access to clean air to be considered as a “basic human right”.

  • University of Birmingham is working with partners in India, Africa and Asia to help understand how our cities can tackle problems caused by air pollution.

  • The ASAAP India (A Systems Approach to Air Pollution India) workshop brought together partners from India, Africa, Asia, Europe and US to explore how cities such as Delhi can better understand how to tackle air pollution.
United States Special Forces hold exercise with NSG in Hyderabad

  • The United States Special Forces Group stationed in Japan is involved in a joint exercise with India’s National Security Guard in Hyderabad, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces of the two countries.

  • The Hyderabad-exercise would help build interoperability and comradeship between the two forces and was designed to enhance the capabilities of both Indian and U.S. armed forces.
SC clarified IPS having minimum of 6 months tenure left should be considered for DGP post

  • The Supreme Court clarified its last year order on police reforms and said officers who have a minimum of six months tenure left in service can be considered for the post of Director General of Police (DGP).

  • Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi headed the bench and recommended for the post of DGP by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and preparation of the appointment panel should be purely on the basis of merit.

  • The emphasis is to select the best and to ensure a minimum tenure of two years’ service of such officer who is to be selected and appointed.
Ban on e-cigarettes in 12 states health ministry urges all to follow

  • Following the advice of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, atleast 12 states in India have banned Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS).

  • Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Jharkhand have taken steps to ban the use of ENDS.

  • ENDS emits nicotine, the addictive component of tobacco products which made the Doctors claim e-cigarettes pose significant health risks to users that are frighteningly similar to those of conventional cigarette.
India Extends USD 250 million To Nepal for Reconstruction of Infrastructures

  • India has extended a grant assistance of up to USD 250 million to Nepal for the reconstruction of infrastructures in the areas of housing, education, health and cultural heritage that was destroyed during the devastating April 2015 earthquake which saw the death of over 9,000 people.

  • During the India-Nepal Joint Project Monitoring Committee meeting in New Delhi, officials from the two countries reviewed the progress of post-earthquake reconstruction projects.

Russia releases coin commemorating annexation of Crimea

  • A new coin that features the Crimea or Kerch Strait Bridge has been released by Russia’s central bank, to mark Crimea’s reunification with Russia.

  • Two million new five ruble (about $0.08, €0.07) coins were pressed which depict an outline of the peninsula which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

  • This is second commemoration of Crimea, the first being a 200 ruble note released in 2015 and depicted the desire of the people of Russia to see these symbols on notes.
Fresh Liquidity Infusion Through Forex Swaps announced by RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to use a new tool for the first time to enhance liquidity in the system using which it will buy $5 billion from the banks in a swap deal that is capable of injecting around Rs. 35,000 crores into the system.

  • Banks will have to deposit dollar funds with RBI with the condition of buying them back from RBI after 3 years.

  • The first-ever auction of this kind involving US dollar buy/sell swap will happen on [latex]26^{th}[/latex] March 2019.

  • Minimum bid size for the auction has been fixed at $25 million and multiple bids submission by banks will be allowed. However, the aggregate amount of bids submitted by single eligible entity should not exceed the notified amount of auction.

  • After South America’s ruling body CONMEBOL once again ruled out a US proposal to host the tournament, Argentina and Colombia are poised to co-host the 2020 Copa America.

  • It is for the first time in the modern Copa America era that the tournament will be split between two countries. The two countries separated by some 4,350 miles (7,000 kilometers).

  • This year’s tournament is to be staged in Brazil between [latex]14^{th}[/latex] June and [latex]7^{th}[/latex] July. CONMEBOL is responsible for the organization and governance of South American football’s major international tournaments.

  • CONMEBOL is a 10 member football associations, it has the fewest members of all the confederations in FIFA.

  • Special Olympics World Games 2019 begin at Abu Dhabi in UAE. The event has already made history by welcoming a record-breaking 200 nations at the Games. Of the 200 nations, 195 will compete in the Games and five will observe.

  • More than 2,500 women will fly the flag for their nation, with almost half of them performing in athletics competitions. Saudi Arabia will send female athletes for the first time, with 14 women participating.

  • Hosts UAE will field its largest-ever squad of athletes at a World Games, followed by India and the United States.

  • Social entrepreneur from Tamil Nadu, Padmanaban Gopalan, founder of No Food Waste, was named the winner of the Commonwealth Youth Award for the Asian region worth 3,000 Pounds at a ceremony at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

  • He was given the honour for his work towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Zero Hunger with his innovative system of recovering excess food to distribute to those in need.

  • The initiative runs a geo-mapping platform, which allows users to drop food at located “hunger spots” and has so far recovered over 650,000 meals across 14 cities and the platform has been used by over 12,000 volunteers.
