Saudi Arabia revokes Hamza bin Laden's citizenship after US announces bounty

  • In a major development aimed at bolstering Saudi-US ties, Riyadh revoked the citizenship of Hamza bin Laden - son of slain terrorist Osama bin Laden.

  • The decision to revoke Hamza's citizenship comes after US had announced a $1 million bounty on him. This is because Hamza has emerged as a key leader of terrorist organsiation Al-Qaeda and is believed to have his base near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

  • According to BBC, 30-year-old Hamza may have been groomed to be Al-Qaeda's future leader by Osama. This was first revealed when US forces recovered several letters from the Abbottabad compound in which Osama had been shot dead in 2011 by US Navy Seals.
China opens its airspace for flights to reroute as Pakistan airspace remains shut: Report

  • As Pakistan airspace continues to be closed due to mounting tensions with India, China has opened a part of its airspace for foreign airlines to reroute.

  • The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) launched an emergency plan under which it has notified domestic flight companies and asked them to cooperate with the air force to ensure the safety of flights and implement temporary flight plans. The direction came after the Beijing Capital International Airport cancelled all flights to and from Pakistan.

  • Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) with Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment have organized a national conference on “Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme” at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi on [latex]1^{st}[/latex] March, 2019.

  • The motive behind this conference is to lay impact on the need for creation of an inclusive society that accepts and respects disabled persons without discrimination.

SBI reports frauds worth ₹7,951 crore in April-December of FY19

  • State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest lender by assets, has said it had reported frauds totalling ₹7,951 crore during first nine months of 2018-19.

  • Fraudulent activity had been mainly in some large-value accounts. SBI said all those accounts were classified as non-performing assets "much earlier", with most of the portfolio already fully provisioned for.
AIIB approved USD 455 Million loan for the Andhra Pradesh Rural Roads Project

  • A loan agreement of USD 455 million was signed between the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Government of India for financing the Andhra Pradesh Rural Roads Project, which will connect 3,300 habitations with a population of more than 250, and benefit around 2 million people in New Delhi.

  • The objective of the Project is to improve road transport connectivity in previously unserved communities by providing all weather rural roads in all 13 Districts of Andhra Pradesh.

  • It is the third project in Andhra Pradesh signed by the AIIB after two projects in Power Sector and Water Sector.
India’s first policy to protect bank locker launched by IFFCO Tokio General Insurance

  • IFFCO Tokio General Insurance launched ‘bank locker protector policy’, the first stand-alone bank locker cover offered by any insurance company with a plan to protect the contents of a bank locker such as jewelry, title documents, and other valuables.

  • The policy offers a cover against various risks including fire, earthquake, burglary, holdup, infidelity by a bank staff or any act of terrorism.

  • .Important documents kept in a locker can also be insured under the policy as an add-on cover.

  • The policy can be sold both as a retail and a group policy for banks.

  • It offers 7 options of sum insured ranging from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 40 lakh and above and the premium rate is affordable with a cover of Rs 3 lakh available at just Rs 300, which is less than Rs 1 per day.
India’s economy to grow at 7.3% in 2019-20 : Moody’s report

  • According to the US-based rating agency – Moody’s quarterly Global Macro Outlook which was released on [latex]1^{st}[/latex] March, 2019, Indian economy is expected to grow at 7.3 per cent in 2019 and 2020.

  • According to Moody’s India is less exposed to decline in global manufacturing trade growth than other Asian economies and emerging markets and is balanced to grow at a relatively stable pace in the next two years.

Supreme Court reserves order on Sreesanth's plea against BCCI's lifetime ban

  • The Supreme Court reserved its order on a plea by former cricketer S Sreesanth challenging the lifetime ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for his alleged involvement in match-fixing during IPL 2013.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi conferred Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 in New Delhi.

  • Several IITs combined won eight awards at the ceremony for the coveted Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, in New Delhi. Close behind the IITs was the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (IISc), which won seven prizes at the ceremony.

  • Eleven scientists were given the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for 2016. The awardees include Dr Rishikesh Narayan of Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and Dr Amalendu Krishna of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.

  • Among the ten scientists who got the prize for 2017 are Dr Deepak Gaur of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and Dr S Suresh Babu of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

  • There were thirteen prize winners for 2018. They include Dr Amit Kumar of IIT, Delhi and Dr Nitin Saxena, IIT, Kanpur.

  • Kargil War hero and present Eastern Air Command chief Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar has been appointed as the new chief of Indian Air Force's sword arm Western Air Command (WAC).

  • A 1982 batch IAS officer of Manipur cadre, he was the Finance Secretary to the Government of India and has also served as Secretary to the 14th Finance Commission, headed by former RBI Governor, Shri Y.V. Reddy.

  • The 15th Finance Commission was constituted by a Presidential Order in November, 2017 under the Chairmanship of Shri N. K. Singh to decide the formula for devolution of revenue between Centre and States, for a period of 5 years – April, 2020 to March, 2025.

  • Scientists led by IIT (BHU) researcher Abhishek Srivastava have discovered tadpole-shaped jets coming out of regions with intense magnetic fields on the Sun.
