  • Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar was designated a global terrorist by the UN after China withdrew its long-standing block to the move, marking a major diplomatic and political victory in the Indian government’s efforts to counter cross-border terrorism.

  • Azhar was listed by the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee for his association with al-Qaeda and his role in financing, planning and facilitating terrorist acts by the JeM, shortly after officials announced in Islamabad that Pakistan would no longer object to his designation – a sign to iron brother China to lift the “technical hold” it had placed on four attempts to sanction Azhar.
Russia warns US over 'aggressive' moves in Venezuela

  • Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared the Class 12th results today for all regions. Overall pass percentage this year is 83.4%.

  • Hansika Shukla and Karishma Arora of UP have scored 499 out of 500 and emerged as CBSE topper.

  • A total of 3114831 candidates were registered out of which 12, 87, 359 had appeared for CBSE class 12th exam.

Supreme Court gives government 4 days to file Rafale affidavit

  • The Supreme Court gave the Centre four days instead of four weeks to file its reply to the review petitions filed in the Rafale case and allowed Congress president Rahul Gandhi to file a “good affidavit” in a related contempt case after the judges said they weren’t convinced by his expression of regret on the matter.

  • Attorney general KK Venugopal sought four weeks’ time to file the Centre’s reply. The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, directed the government to file its reply by [latex]4^{th}[/latex] May and posted the matter for hearing on [latex]6^{th}[/latex] May .

  • The bench, also comprising justice Sanjay Kaul and justice KM Joseph, sought the Centre’s reply on a separate plea by the petitioner to initiate perjury action against officials who allegedly misguided the apex court in the Rafale case.
Government lifts traffic ban on Uri-Srinagar road

  • Authorities announced an end to the restrictions on civilian traffic along the 100 km stretch between Uri and Srinagar along the lifeline highway that connects Kashmir to the outside world.

  • The restrictions will be completely lifted from today. “There would be no prohibition on the civilian traffic in this stretch on Sunday or Wednesday.”

  • Civilian traffic along the 301-km Uri - Udhampur highway was banned from 4 am to 5 pm every Sunday and Wednesday until [latex]31^{st}[/latex] May to allow exclusive movement of security forces in view of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections that began on [latex]11^{th}[/latex] April.

  • The ban followed the car bomb attack along the highway that left 40 paramilitary troopers dead in Pulwama district on [latex]14^{th}[/latex] February.
Environment Ministry Constitutes Committee To Implement National Clean Air Programme

  • The Union Environment Ministry has constituted a committee to implement the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), which aims to reduce particulate matter (PM) pollution by 20%-30% in at least 102 cities by 2024.

File affidavit on powers to regulate expenditure by parties: Delhi HC to EC

  • The Delhi High Court directed the Election Commission (EC) to file an affidavit indicating the powers it has to ensure implementation of its guidelines regarding disclosure of expenditure by political parties.

  • A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani gave a final opportunity to the poll panel to submit the document and said it if fails to do so then the court will proceed to pass orders.

  • The high court also noted that the matter has been pending for the last five years and the direction to EC in February to file the affidavit has not been complied with till date.
Delhi High Court issues notice to Jet Airways

  • The Delhi High Court has issued notice to Jet Airways on a plea seeking direction to the Civil Aviation Ministry and DGCA to ensure refunds or provide alternative travel mode for passengers who have booked tickets with the airlines.

  • The Jet Airways had last month announced a temporary suspension of its operations after it failed to receive emergency funds from lenders.

  • A bench, headed by Chief Justice Rajendra Menon, sought a response from Jet Airways and also asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to file an affidavit on the issue.

  • Boxing Federation of India will be launching the Indian Boxing League (IBL) this year in the month of July or August. The announcement was made by BFI president Ajay Singh during an event in New Delhi.

  • The Indian boxers logged in their best performance at the tournament, fetching 13 medals including two gold, four silver and seven bronze. The men picked up seven medals, while the women managed six.

  • In VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL 2019), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will host Delhi Capitals (DC) led by Shreyas Iyer at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Having already qualified for the playoffs, DC will look to consolidate their top position in the IPL points table 2019.

  • Capitals have qualified for the IPL playoffs after seven years and after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 16 runs at their home ground in Match 46. Super Kings, on the other hand, at the 2nd spot in the IPL 2019 points table, will look get back to the top position.

  • In the two matches that MS Dhoni has not played, Chennai have not been able to handle the pressure and have lost the game. He is still doubtful for today’s game.

  • CSK coach Stephen Fleming has said that skipper MS Dhoni's fitness is progressing and the team will take a call on his participation on the match day. Head to head, Chennai Super Kings have an advantage as they have won 13 out of 19 matches, while Delhi Capitals have won six.

IAS officer Dilip Kumar appointed OSD to become the first bureaucrat in Lokpal

  • Senior IAS officer Dilip Kumar was appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the office of Lokpal.

  • It is perhaps the first official appointment of a bureaucrat in Lokpal.

  • Kumar, a 1995-batch IAS officer of Punjab cadre, is at present joint secretary, National Human Rights Commission.

  • He has been appointed for a period of six months on additional charge basis or till a new incumbent joins the post, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry said.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind had on March 23 administered the oath of office to Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the chairperson of Lokpal.

  • Justice Ghose retired from Supreme Court in May 2017. He then served as member of the NHRC before taking over as the Lokpal chief.

China launches two satellites for scientic experiments

  • China successfully sent two Tianhui II-01 satellites into orbit from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China’s Shanxi Province.

Madras, Kerala HC Ex-CJ Justice Subhashan Reddy passes away

  • Former chief justice of the Kerala and Madras High Courts B Subhashan Reddy died yesterday in Hyderabad following a brief illness.

  • The 76-year-old was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Gachibowli. Reddy, who served as the Lokayukta of the combined Andhra Pradesh state, has also been the first chairman of Andhra Pradesh state Human Rights Commission and Lokayukta.

  • He was born at Bagh Amberpet in Hyderabad Urban Taluk on 2-03-1943, and educated at Sultan Bazar and Chadarghat High Schools, Hyderabad, New Science College and Osmania University College of Science, University College of Law, Osmania University.
