  • Sudan`s Transitional Military Council has invited the opposition to a meeting in Khartoum, with the two sides at loggerheads over how long it will take to move to civilian rule after the ouster of former autocrat ruler Omar al-Bashir.

Election 2019: 210 Candidates Contesting Lok Sabha Phase 4 Election Have Criminal Cases

  • A total of 210 candidates contesting in phase four of the Lok Sabha elections face criminal charges, with 158 having serious cases and 12 of them convicted cases, according to the National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

  • Five candidates have declared cases related to murder, 24 have declared cases related to attempt to murder, four have declared cases related to kidnapping, 21 have declared cases related to crime against women and 16 candidates have declared cases related to hate speech.

  • The ADR has analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 928 out of 943 candidates contesting in the Lok Sabha phase four across 71 constituencies in eight states.
Fire in Air India aircraft`s auxiliary power unit during repair, no injuries reported

Key Highlights:

  • An Air India aircraft caught fire at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The plane was empty at the time of repair work.

  • According to a video released by news agency, the fire could be seen at the tail end of the aircraft. The Boeing 777 flight, which was scheduled for San Francisco, caught fire in the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). The fire in the flight AI-173 started during the repair of the AC.

  • Taking to Twitter, Air India announced that the flight, which was scheduled to depart has been postponed. The airline apologised for the same.
SC takes exception to lawyer’s remarks on AG, warns him

  • Supreme Court proceedings on an alleged larger conspiracy to malign the Chief Justice of India in a sexual harassment complaint witnessed heated arguments with the bench taking strong exception to a lawyer’s remarks against Attorney General K K Venugopal and threatening to evict him from the courtroom.

  • As lawyer Utsav Bains objected to the AG’s submission that he was withholding information and contended that Venugopal was personally targeting him, a bench of Justices Arun Mishra, R F Nariman and Deepak Gupta warned him and said that it cannot allow any lawyer to point finger at AG.
Two terrorists killed in encounter in J&K's Anantnag

  • A Delhi court granted exemption from personal appearance to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and directed him to appear before it on [latex]9^{th}[/latex] May in a defamation case filed against him by NSA Ajit Doval's son Vivek.

  • Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal also granted bail to The Caravan's editor-in-chief and its reporter, who appeared before the court after they were summoned as accused in the case.

  • The court granted exemption to Mr Ramesh after the Congress leader moved an application and sought exemption from appearing before it.

SoftBank to invest $1 bn in German payments firm Wirecard

  • Japan's SoftBank Group will invest around $1 billion in Wirecard in a convertible bond deal that could give it a 5.6% stake in the German digital payments company.

  • Wirecard shares rose as much as 15.8% following the announcement. The rally lifted the firm's market value to $18.4 billion, once again surpassing that of Germany's largest lender Deutsche Bank.
Rupee tumbles 22 paise against dollar on crude concerns

RBI asks banks to disclose their IL&FS exposure

Asian Athletics Championships 2019 Day 4: Four More Medals for India

  • PU Chitra smartly outplayed the Bahrainis defend her women’s 1500m gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championship at the Khalifa Stadium. The result meant that India finished the competition with a tally of 17 medals, including 3 gold, 7 silver medals, and 7 bronze.

  • Ajay Kumar Saroj, probably inspired by Chitra, almost tried out a similar strategy in the men’s 1500m and was rewarded with a silver.

Asia Badminton Championships: PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal Advance, Kidambi Srikanth Crashes Out

  • PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and Sameer Verma won their opening matches of Asia Badminton Championships to enter the pre-quarterfinal round in Wuhan, China on [latex]24^{th}[/latex] April.

  • However, Kidambi Srikanth suffered an early exit after losing 16-21, 20-22 to Indonesian shuttler Shesar Rhustavito in the first round of men's singles.

  • Sindhu cruised through her World No 13 Japanese opponent Sayaka Takahashi 21-14, 21-7. In Round 16 she will face Choirunnisa of Indonesia. While Sindhu won her match in just 28 minutes, Saina's match lasted for 61 minutes as her Chinese opponent Han Yue gave her a tough fight throughout.

  • The Olympic bronze medallist lost the first set quite easily but showed her resilience and came back strongly to win the remaining two games and eventually the match 12-21, 21-11, 21-17. She will be up against World No 36 Korea's Kim Ga Eun in the next round.

Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Jean passed away aged 98
