Sushma Swaraj takes on Pakistan minister over Hindu girls' abduction, forced conversion

Indian Air Force to induct Chinook heavy-lift choppers today

  • Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa will induct four CH47 Chinook heavy-lift choppers into the Indian Air Force in Chandigarh. India has paid close to $ 1.5 billion for 15 of these helicopters which would be also used for deploying troops and machinery at high altitude locations.

  • A multi-mission heavy-left transport helicopter, Chinook will be used to move troops, artillery, ammunition, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield.

  • It is highly manoeuvrable, which makes it suitable for operating in tough, dense terrain.

  • Its 24X7, all-weather operational capabilities are crucial for India Air Force, which operates in some of the most hostile terrains in the world.

Implementation of Indian Accounting Standards deferred by RBI

Key Highlights:

  • Reserve Bank of India postponed the implementation of the Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) by banks until further notice for the reason of requisite legislative amendments, which are still under consideration of the government.

  • Earlier, Reserve Bank of India had postponed the implementation of the Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) by the banks in April 2018 by one year.

  • Legislative amendments are recommended by the Reserve Bank of India.

  • From 1st April 2018, Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) are the norms which are required to implement for Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs), excluding Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).

  • According to Fitch Ratings’ local unit, if the rule had implemented India’s state-run lenders would have had to increase provisions by approx. 1.1 trillion rupees ($16 billion) in the fiscal first quarter (end in June).

  • It would have an impact to the public sector lenders to boost “substantial” amounts of extra capital, beyond the estimated 1.9 trillion rupee infusion which was committed by the government for the two-year period to the end of March.
SBI may ask senior retired banker to helm Jet Airways

Italy’s Earth-Watching PRISMA Satellite launched by Vega Rocket

  • Italy’s new Earth-observation satellite named PRISMA (Precursore Iperspettrale della Missione Applicativa) launched from the Guiana Space Centre by 98 foot (30 meters) tall Vega rocket which was developed by the joint venture of Italian Space Agency and the European Space Agency.

  • PRISMA is an electro-optical instrument, which is designed to take medium resolution photos to give information about environmental monitoring, natural resources, pollution and crop health.

  • The PRISMA satellite will operate in a sun-synchronous orbit.

  • According to an OHB Italia SpA press release, it was manufactured by a temporary joint venture of companies led by LEONARDO SpA and OHB Italia SpA.
