Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor no longer listed under BRI umbrella

  • India’s decision to skip the Belt and Road Forum (BRF) may have led to the exclusion of the Bangladesh- China- India- Myanmar (BCIM) Economic corridor from the list of projects covered by the China-led Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) umbrella.

  • In an annex tagged with the Joint Communiqué of the Leaders’ Roundtable of the BRF, which concluded in Beijing on Saturday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry website has not listed the BCIM as a project covered by the BRI — the giant connectivity initiative speared by China to revive the ancient Silk Road across Eurasia and Africa.

  • Instead, South Asia is covered by three major undertakings — the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC); the Nepal-China Trans-Himalayan Multi-dimensional Connectivity Network, including Nepal-China cross-border railway; and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
UK Home Office being probed on English-test cheating case

  • Britain’s Home Office is under investigation by the country’s spending watchdog over its treatment of thousands of students — mostly from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh — whose visas were cancelled over allegations of cheating in English language tests that they had taken to come to the UK.

  • The investigation follows years of warnings from campaigners that tens of thousands of students had been unjustly treated, after being mistakenly deemed to have cheated in their tests in a crackdown by the government that followed revelations of fraud at two testing centres.

  • Rural population account for 45.3% of the world’s total population and at least 70% of the world’s population remains extremely poor.

  • The rural population suffers from rapid population growth rates, inadequate job and enterprise creation, poor infrastructure, scarce financial services.

  • In addition, rural communities bear the brunt of climate change impacts.

  • Nearly 50% of rural youth all over the world do not have any formal job they are either unemployed or under-employed.

Air India offers engines as collateral for new ones: Report

  • Air India has reportedly offered three new-generation engines that power its Airbus A320neo fleet as collateral to lenders for financing the purchase of five engines.

  • The national carrier is yet to receive one of the engines being offered as collateral, the report added. This comes after the ₹2,000-crore sovereign guarantee provided by the government to the carrier ended last year.
Indian Army signs MoU with NHPC for construction of tunnels on China, Pakistan borders

  • Indian Army signed an MoU with National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) to construct tunnels on borders with China and Pakistan for storage of ammunition and other war-related equipment.

  • Under the pilot project, three tunnels will be built on China border while one will be built along the Line of Control with Pakistan. The project is meant to bolster the Indian Army’s capabilities along the Chinese border where India’s infrastructural development is far outpaced by that of China.
Cyclone Fani likely to intesify into severe cyclonic storm, Kerala braces for heavy rain

  • The Cyclone Warning Division of the MeT department said Cyclone Fani, which has been forming in south-east Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Indian Ocean, is very likely to intensify into a 'severe cyclonic storm' in the next six hours and further soar into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' in the next 24 hours.

  • The Cyclone Warning Division said Fani currently lays over 745 kilometres east-southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 1,050 kilometres southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 1,230 kilometres south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh).

  • Heavy falls at isolated places are very likely over Kerala on April 29 and 30. The cyclone will not make landfall in Tamil Nadu, but may bring light rain in some northern parts, the weather department said. Earlier, it was expected to cause heavy rains in northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai.
Delhi: Fire breaks out outside Sonia Gandhi Camp in RK Puram Sector 7

  • A fire broke out today in Sector 7 of Delhi's RK Puram. The fire was reported outside the Sonia Gandhi Camp in RK Puram. Four fire tenders are said to be present at the site. The fire fighters are trying to douse the fire outside the Sonia Gandhi Camp.

  • No casualty has been reported so far. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained.

  • At least eight shanties were gutted after a fire broke out at RK Puram .
India working on district-based development model: Prabhu

SC gave ultimatum to RBI to disclose information under RTI Act

  • Recently, Supreme Court bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao has directed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to disclose information related to its annual inspection report of banks under the Right to Information (RTI) Act until and unless they are exempted under law.

  • The bench has also directed the RBI to review its policy to disclose information relating to banks under RTI.

  • The bench was hearing a contempt petition filed by RTI activists Subhash Chandra Agarwal and Girish Mittal against the Reserve Bank of India.

  • According to the petitioners, they had asked copies of RBI’s inspection reports of ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and SBI between April 2011 and December 2015 but the central bank rejected to provide this information by stating that it is exempted under section 8(1)(e) of the RTI Act and section 45NB of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
Central Government hikes customs duty on wheat to 40 percent

  • The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) hiked the basic customs duty (BCD) on wheat to 40% from 30%.

  • The objective is to restrict imports so that domestic prices of wheat do not come under pressure as the country’s wheat production in this season might cross 100 million tonnes.

  • Last year in May, the government hiked the basic customs duty on wheat to 30% from 20%.

Female US pilot who lost legs during Iraq war, returns as Senator
