16th International Anti-Corruption Day celebrated on December 9, 2018

  • The day has been celebrated since the passage of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption on 31 October 2003 to raise public awareness for anti-corruption.

  • UN along with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized a global campaign called “Corruption: An impediment to Sustainable Development Goals”- for spreading the awareness on corruption.

Japanese parliament approved a new law allowing foreigners into the country to ease labour shortages from April 2019.

Key Highlights:
  • Workers in the first category will be allowed in for five years if they have a certain level of skill and some proficiency in Japanese.

  • Workers with a higher level of skills would qualify for the second visa category and would eventually be allowed to apply for residency.

  • After the passing of the legislation, 345,150 blue-collar workers will be allowed in the next 5 years. The initial numbers considered for this was 500,000.

  • Union Minister for Electronics & IT, Law & Justice, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, launched a National Challenge for Youths,“Ideate for India – Creative Solutions using Technology”, in New Delhi.

  • Out of all submissions, around 360 students (10 students per State & UT) will be selected by a panel of experts to attend 5 regional Boot Campsorganized in North, South, East, West and North Eastern regions of the country (1 in each region).

  • Futhermore, the experts will select top 50 students who will be invited and felicitated at a National Level Event to showcase their prototypes implemented in communities and will be declared Tech Creation Champions.
INDRA NAVY: the bilateral maritime exercise between indian Navy and Russian Federation Navy exercises held in Visakhapatnam

Key Highlights:
  • The 10th Edition of the bilateral exercise between Indian Navy and Russian Federation Navy (RuFN) started at Vishakhapatnam. The Maritime exercise will conclude on December 16.

  • The Primary aim of the exercise is to increase interoperability amongst the two navies, develop common understanding and procedures for maritime security operations.
  • This Year’s edition of exercise would be held in two phases, The Harbour phase would be held at Visakhapatnam from 9-12 December and the Sea phase would be held from 13-16 December in bay of Bengal.

  • Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Air Defence Drills, Surface firings, Visit Board search and Seizure (VBSS) operations and tactical procedures will be the thrust of exercises at sea.

  • Military Literature Festival (MLF) 2018, commenced at Lake Club in Chandigarh. The festival will conclude on December 9, 2018.

  • A ‘Clarion Call‘ theatre was set up which screened 40 short films on the Army’s wars since Independence, is the new attraction.

  • It also showcased the famous battle of Longewala and other documentaries the famous battles of Saragarhi, Basantar, Dograi, and Bana Top besides the naval battles of 1971 and world’s largest tank battle of Khemkaran.

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu jointly inaugurated the Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL).

  • KIAL is the fourth international airport in the state. The other three are Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode and with the commissioning of KIAL, Kerala becomes the state with the highest density of airports in the country.

  • Vijayan and Prabhu flagged off the first flight, an Air India Express with 180 passengers bound for Abu DhabiM.
India’s first underwater museum to open off Puducherry coast in INS Cuddalore

  • Indian Navy agreed to gift INS Cuddalore, a decommissioned Pondicherry-class vessel, to the Union territory of Puducherry for the creation of country’s first underwater museum.

  • It would be sent to the sea bed at a depth of 26 m and 7 km off the Pondicherry coast to act as an underwater marine museum for scuba diving and snorkelling activities. This would enhance tourism in the UT.

  • It would also help in enhanced marine biodiversity and boosting fishing industry.

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) signed a loan agreement worth USD 100 mn with Green Climate Fund (GCF) to boost rooftop solar power capacity projects through the private sector participation.

  • The Agreement was signed, on the sidelines of ongoing COP24 in Katowice, Poland, by: Shri Shankar A Pande, Chief General Manager, NABARD in the presence of Shri A K Mehta, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

  • GCF is an UNFCC-promoted Fund that has NABARD as the National Implementing Entity (NIE).
AIIB Clears $400 million loan for water supply project in Andhra Pradesh

  • The Beijing Headquartered Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) had approved a $400 million loan for a Water Sanitation Project in Andhra Pradesh.

  • The Project will be very helpful for women and girls of affected community in Andhra Pradesh and it will reduce the health risks and health expenditure for the people of Andhra Pradesh.

  • India is the second largest shareholder of Asian Infrastructure Development Bank after China.

  • After this Loan the overall loan amount of India from AIIB reached to $2 Billion spread over nine projects. This loan will strengthen the AIIB’s capacity and loan demand from other states is also expected to increase.

Shubhankar Sharma becomes youngest Indian to win Asian Tour Order of Merit

  • Shubhankar Sharma became the youngest and the fifth Indian to win Asian Tour Order of Merit in golf. The Indian won it even before the finish of the last two events of the year.

  • Sharma, Jyoti Randhawa (2002), Arjun Atwal (2003), Jeev Milkha Singh (2006 and 2008) and Anirban Lahiri (2015) had achieved the feat.

  • With the win, Shubhankar Sharma also captured the Asian Tour Habitat for Humanity Standings title after a ground breaking year of achievements.

  • Madhya Pradesh batsman Ajay Rohera scored 267 unbeaten on his first-class debut against Hyderabad while playing the Ranji Trophy match in Indore.

  • Rohera broke Amol Muzumdar’s 25-year-old world record of highest score on first-class debut which Amol set against Haryana at Faridabad back in 1994.

  • Rohera had also added another feather to his cap during his innings by becoming the highest individual scorer for Madhya Pradesh surpassing J P Yadav’s 265.

  • China launched its Chang’e-4 moon mission aboard the Long March 3B launch vehicle to reach the far side of the moon for the first time, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province in southwestern China. Chang’e is the goddess of the moon in Chinese mythology.
