US sanctions may lead to 'deluge' of drugs, refugees on West: Iran

14 killed in shootout during attempted bank robbery in Brazil

  • At least 14 people were killed on Friday when a shootout broke out between the police and bank robbers in Milagres in the Brazilian state of Ceará.

  • Lielson Macedo Landim, the Mayor of Milagres said that six people taken hostage during the robbery were killed by their captors. The authorities have reportedly arrested two suspected robbers.
Trump calls former US State Secretary 'dumb as a rock'

  • "Rex Tillerson didn't have the mental capacity needed...I couldn't get rid of him fast enough. He was lazy as hell," Trump tweeted. Trump had fired Tillerson in March.

Army soldier suspected of killing Bulandshahr cop detained in J&K

  • An Army soldier suspected of killing a policeman during the mob violence over alleged cow slaughter in UP's Bulandshahr has been detained from 22 Rashtriya Rifles Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore.

  • Jitendra Malik will be handed over to UP Police on Saturday. Meanwhile, Malik's mother said she would kill him herself if he is found guilty.
EVM machine found lying on road in Rajasthan, 2 suspended

  • An EVM machine was found lying unattended on the national highway in Shahabad area of Kishanganj constituency in Rajasthan.

  • Police were informed about the EVM after it was spotted by the locals of the area. Two officials have been suspended in connection with the incident and the machine has been kept in an EVM storage room.
All India Radio official demoted after 9 sexual harassment charges

  • An All India Radio (AIR) official accused of sexual harassment by nine women employees has been demoted from his position as he was found guilty, National Commission for Women.

  • "The authority imposed a major penalty of reduction to a lower pay scale by two stages for one year and no increment during the reduction period," NCW added.
30 kids hospitalised after receiving vaccine at UP school

  • As many as 30 children fell ill and were hospitalised after they were administered with Rubella vaccine at a school in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur.

  • The children, aged below 12, reportedly complained of acute headache and giddiness immediately after receiving the vaccine. Some of the children were discharged after being provided first aid, an official said.

ADB enters an arrangement with World Bank for co-financed projects

  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) has entered into an arrangement with the World Bank to put in place a single framework that will make co-financed projects more efficient.

  • ADB’s first Alternative Procurement Arrangement (APA) with the World Bank will allow procedures on co-financed projects to follow a single procurement framework.

  • The APA is a step further towards reducing procurement timelines in line with Strategy 2030. Strategy 2030 is ADB’s long-term plan to respond effectively to the Asia and Pacific region’s changing needs.

  • In 2017, ADB operations totalled USD 32.2 billion, including USD 11.9 billion in co-financing.

  • This will lessen the burden on executing and implementing agencies that have traditionally used multiple procurement frameworks on a single project and project implementation.

Rattan Lal honoured with Glinka World Soil Prize 2018

  • Rattan Lal, has won the Glinka World Soil Prize 2018 in a ceremony at the Rome headquarters of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for his outstanding contribution to sustainable soil management.

  • Rattan Lal is a distinguished university professor of soil science at the Ohio State University and also the President of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS).

  • The Glinka World Soil Prize, named after the pioneering Russian scientist Konstantin D. Glinka, is considered the highest honour in the soil science profession.

  • He has been listed among the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds (2012) and among the top one per cent of all researchers in agriculture.

  • The first World Soil Day Award was on December 05 2018 given to “Practical Action”, Bangladesh for organizing the best World Soil Day celebration in 2017.

  • The new FAO-established award is funded by Thailand.
