shape History

First Grand Match of Cricket Played by Members of the Royal Amateur Society on Hampton Court Green. The sport of cricket has a known history beginning in the late [latex]{16}^{th}[/latex] century. Having originated in south-east England, it became the country's national sport in the [latex]{18}^{th}[/latex] century and has developed globally in the [latex]{19}^{th}[/latex] and [latex]{20}^{th}[/latex] centuries. International matches have been played since 1844 and Test cricket began, retrospectively recognised, in 1877. Cricket is the world's second most popular spectator sport after association football. Governance is by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which has over one hundred countries and territories in membership although only twelve play Test cricket.
The tournament involving multiple international teams had been held as early as 1912, when a triangular tournament of Test matches was played between Australia, England and South Africa. The first three World Cups were held in England.
