SAT being a standardized test widely used for college admission in the United States; it is necessary for one to able to know how the grading system and results are determined.
  • SAT scores are points that are awarded in the marking system which will decide the outcome of ones result and that you will need to get into college.

  • Everything does not depend on registration, reading and taking the SAT exam but rather whether your scores or grades will enable you to secure a spot in the admission list of your desired college and course.

Interpreting SAT Scores - SAT - General Facts:
The reading, writing and language sections have a total score of 800 points
The Mathematics section has a total score of 800 points
The SAT total score summed up to 1600 points and is the highest score one can get based on the combination of all sections of the exam
An Excellent SAT Score is that which is above the Average SAT Score of a College
A Good SAT Score is that which is between the Average SAT Score of a College
A Bad SAT Score is that which is below the Average SAT Score of a College
There are three types of SAT Scores, which are; Basic, Cross and Sub Test Scores

Interpreting SAT Scores - SAT - SAT Scores:
There are three kinds of SAT scores which are;

1) Basic Test Score :
  • This Basic Scores enable colleges to compare one to other students who took a different version of the exams and to also determine ones individual performance on each section to enable them calculate the final score.

  • It has three sections on which is graded on, which are; Reading, Writing or language and Mathematics.

  • You only earn points for the right answers you got.

  • You earn up to the total of 40 points each depending on how many questions you answered.

  • The combination of the reading and writing or language section gives a total score of 800 points.

  • Your Mathematics score is graded based on a total of 800 points.

  • The total section score sum up to 1600 points.


2) Cross-Test Scores:
  • This are scores that are analyzed to determine ones Science, history and social studies skills, and their questions can be asked within each of the three sections.

  • These scores are used to compare one with students who took the ACT.

  • Ones performance is rated on a scale of 10 – 40 points.


3) Sub scores:
  • These scores are based on a 1 – 15 points scale to determine ones performance on specific questions.

  • The sub scores entails; reading sub-scores, writing sub-scores and math sub-scores

  • The reading sub scores are used to determine ones knowledge of; Command of Evidence and Words in Context

  • Writing sub scores are used to determine ones knowledge of; Expression of Ideas and Standard English Conventions.

  • The math sub scores are used to determine ones knowledge of; Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Mathematics.

  • These scores help to determine ones specific skills and where their weaknesses lie


Super scores:
This kind of SAT score is calculated in the case in which one takes the exam more than once and is done by picking the highest scores in each section among all the exams you took.
What is an Excellent SAT Score, A Good SAT Score and A Bad SAT Score?
  • The SAT Score range is between 400 – 1600 for the total points and 200-800 for each of the two sections.

  • Your total score out of 1600 and section score out of 800 sums up your percentile ranking; that which will determine whether you had an excellent, good or bad result and also those you scored more than in the test. For instance 85% percentile simply means you scored more than 85% of the test takers.

  • A Good/Average SAT score can be said to be that which is between 1050 – 1600 points for the Total Score Scale of 1600, between 520 – 530 in Math section and between 530 – 540 in both reading and writing section for the Total Score Scale of 800 per section. These records are subject to change based on rapid development in the system.

  • A Bad SAT score is that which is below 1050 points for the Total Score Scale of 1600, below 530 in Math section and below 540 in both reading and writing section for the Total Score Scale of 800 per section.

  • Nevertheless, what makes an excellent, good or bad SAT score generally depends or is based on the schools you are applying to. For instance schools like the University of Cincinnati (average SAT score – 1240), ASU (average SAT – 1230) etc. we also got schools whose average SAT score are below 1050.

  • Browse through Google to know the average SAT score of the college you are applying to; any score above their average is an Excellent SAT Score, below their average is a Bad SAT Score and between their average is a Good SAT Score. Also, try to rank highest in your percentile.
