The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is primarily responsible for the allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches which look into the important matters of law. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) also heads the administrative functions which include maintenance of the roster; appointment of court officials and general and miscellaneous matters relating to the supervision and functioning of the Supreme Court. Fact: Supreme Court came into being in January 1950, the year the Constitution came into effect. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the highest judicial officer of thenation.
In accordance with Article 145 of the Constitution of India and the Supreme Court Rules of Procedure of 1966, the Chief Justice of India is responsible to allocate all work to the other judges who are bound to refer the matter back to him or her (for re-allocation) in any case where they require it to be looked into by a larger bench of more judges.

Under Article 24 of the Constitution of India, the Chief Justice of India/Supreme Court of India is appointed by the President of India. He/she can hold the office up to the age of 65 years. Generally, the Senior Most Justice of Supreme Court of India will be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India/Chief Justice of India.
