Trump says U.S., China still talking on trade but not ready for a deal

  • U.S. President Donald Trump said on August 9 that he was not ready to make a trade deal with China and had decided that the United States would not do business with Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies for the time being, prompting U.S. stocks to fall sharply.

  • Mr. Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, also called into question whether another round of scheduled talks would take place in early September. He plans to impose 10% tariffs on a final $300 billion worth of Chinese imports around that time.
Samjhauta Express, Pakistan suspends Lahore-Delhi bus service

Chhattisgarh government to launch campaign to eradicate malnutrition and anaemia

  • Chhattisgarh government will launch a campaign in the state on October 2 to eradicate malnutrition and anaemia in all aspirational districts, chief minister Bhupesh Baghel announced.

  • The chief minister also announced an increase of scholarship from Rs 700 to Rs 1000 for students of pre-matric hostels and an increase in the number of seats in colleges as well.

  • Russia has backed India’s move on Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the changes in the status are within the framework of the Indian Constitution and hoped that the differences between India and Pakistan are resolved bilaterally on the basis of the Simla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration.

  • India revoked Article 370 of the Constitution to withdraw the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

  • “Moscow expects that India and Pakistan will not allow aggravation of the situation in the region due to the change by Delhi in the status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia said in a response to questions.
NDTV founder Prannoy Roy stopped from travelling abroad

  • NDTV founders Radhika and Prannoy Roy were on August 9 stopped at the Mumbai airport and prevented from travelling abroad. In a statement, the Roys said that this amounted to denial of their basic rights.

  • “They have been stopped on the basis of a fake and wholly unsubstantiated corruption case filed by the CBI about an ICICI loan that was taken by their company RRPR which was fully repaid with interest ahead of schedule,” NDTV said in a statement.

Public sector banks cut MCLR by 25 bps

  • Public sector banks such as Syndicate Bank, Allahabad Bank, and Andhra Bank, announced a cut of up to 25 basis points in their marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) across all tenors, on the back of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cutting its policy repo rate by 35 basis points.

  • Banks such as Syndicate Bank and Union Bank of India, which cut its MCLR by 20 basis points (bps) from August 1, also see scope for further reduction in lending rates.
