At least 17 people have been killed after a small military plane crashed into a residential area near the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi.

  • The announcement came after the alleged hacker was arrested on Monday.

  • According to Capital One, the data included names, addresses and phone numbers of people who applied for its credit card products.
The US Senate has failed in its latest bid to block the controversial sale of $8.1bn (£6.5bn) worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia.

  • The BJP’s core group on Jammu and Kashmir will meet in New Delhi on Tuesday, ostensibly to discuss prospects of polls in the State and the current political situation, amid speculation that the Centre could be preparing to take some strong steps after it moved 10,000 paramilitary men to the State.

  • According to senior BJP sources, however, the meeting, called at the last minute, is unlikely to discuss any of the Centre’s steps in the State and instead is likely to be on the party’s own state of preparedness for political activity after the imposition of President’s rule in the State.

  • Opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha on Monday expressed deep reservations about the Centre’s decision to introduce the Dam Safety Bill, 2019, asserting that the legislation, which is ostensibly aimed at providing uniform safety measures across the country, would undermine the powers of State governments since water is a State subject.

  • Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who introduced the bill, argued that the Centre was empowered to enact a law on the subject, especially as 92% of the dams involved two or more States, and Article 246 and 56 empowered the Centre to intervene.

  • The bill also has a provision for making national standards in medical education uniform by proposing that the final year MBBS exam be treated as an entrance test for PG and a screening test for students who graduate in medicine from foreign countries.

  • This exam, called the National Exit Test (NEXT), would ensure that the proposed National Medical Commission (NMC) moves away from a system of repeated inspections of infrastructure and focuses on outcomes rather than processes, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said.
