  • The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), in its first ever audit of the Goods and Services Tax, has said the government had failed to try out the system before its rollout, leading to inadequate compliance mechanisms, and lower tax revenues. The report was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.

  • The report pointed out that the keystone of the tax system, the invoice matching system, had not yet been put in place even two years after the GST rollout.

  • One soldier was killed in a fierce exchange of fire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri as Pakistan resorted to “unprovoked” ceasefire violation in Pir Panchal Valley’s Rajouri district and the Kashmir Valley and two Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) militants, including a ‘commander’, were killed in an encounter in Anantnag.

  • A Jammu-based Army spokesman identified the soldier killed as Naik Krishan Lal. “The Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Sunderbani Sector in Rajouri.
The flight to Hanoi (6E 1398) will take off from Kolkata at 12.40 pm and the return flight (6E 1399) will reach the city at 5.55 pm, it said.

  • IndiGo is set to launch daily direct flights between Kolkata and Hanoi from October 3, making the Vietnamese capital the fifth Southeast Asian destination on the airline’s network, the low-cost carrier announced.

  • The flight to Hanoi (6E 1398) will take off from Kolkata at 12.40 pm and the return flight (6E 1399) will reach the city at 5.55 pm, it said.

  • William Boulter, the chief commercial officer of IndiGo, said, “It is truly a very special moment for all of us at IndiGo as Kolkata will be connected with Hanoi on its network for the first time.

  • Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan stressed that the overall purpose of the legislation was to ease the process of addressing grievances of consumers.

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2019, which promises to strengthen the rights of consumers and provides a mechanism for redressal of complaints regarding defects in goods and deficiency in services.

  • Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan stressed that the overall purpose of the legislation was to ease the process of addressing grievances of consumers.

  • Apart from setting up of authorities for timely and effective administration and settlement of consumer disputes, the new bill also seeks to bring in e-commerce under their jurisdiction and hold celebrities accountable for false and misleading advertisements of products that they endorse.

  • The Bill, replacing the earlier Consumer Protection Act, 1986, was passed after all the amendments moved by Opposition were negated.

CBSE CTET result 2019 declared in record time, 3.52 lakh qualify

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education has declared the result of Central Teachers’ Eligibility Test (CTET) July 2019 examination. CTET 2019 was held in 104 cities across India on July 7 in which approximately 14 lakh candidates appeared.

  • The result has been declared in a record time of 23 days after the end of the examination. In this exam, 3.52 lakh candidates have been declared qualified.

  • Out of these 3.52 Lacs candidates, 2.15 Lacs qualified in Paper -1(for teaching in grades 1 to 5 in Primary school), and 1.37 Lacs qualified in Paper-2 (for teaching in grades 6 to 8 in upper primary school).

Cash-strapped Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL) on Tuesday said it has defaulted on five-year secured non-convertible debentures (NCDs) carrying 9.32 per cent

  • Two domestic players — Akshay Dullarwar of Vidarbha and Divya Gajraj of Rjasthan — were handed backdated suspensions along with Prithvi Shaw for a doping violation in the 2018-19 domestic season.

  • Akshay Dullarwar of Vidarbha was found to have inadvertently ingested Desacetyl Deflazacort, a metabolite of Deflazacort, which is a Glucocorticoid that is prohibited In-Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances, for treatment of an infection. The urine sample was collected as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program during the Men’s Under-23 One-day match on 10 March 2019 in Hyderabad.

  • The Registrar of Geographical Indications(GI), Chennai has awarded a GI certificate registering the sweetmeat as ”Odisha Rasagola” to the state of Odisha which will be valid till Feb 22, 2028.

  • Cafè Coffee Day Founder VG Siddhartha's body has been found on the banks of river Netravati in Mangaluru after he went missing on Monday. Siddhartha had asked his car driver to drop him at a bridge across the river.

  • Eminent economist and former RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn passed away on July 31.

  • “I share this with a heavy heart...Subir Gokarn, my friend and colleague, passed away a few hours back,” Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) member Shamika Ravi said in a tweet.

  • In November 2015, Gokarn was appointed as an executive director on the board of the IMF. He was appointed the deputy governor of the RBI in 2009 for a term of three years and had the distinction of being the youngest deputy governor at that time. He was also associated with Brooking’s India.
