  • The Indian Council of Agricultural Research, commonly referred to as ICAR is an autonomous organization that was established in 1929.
  • Earlier named as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, ICAR began operations under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
  • Formerly known as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, ICAR has its headquarters in New Delhi.
  • There are 101 ICAR institutes and 71 agricultural universities spread across the nation. It is one of the world's largest national agricultural systems.

The functions of ICAR are given below:
  • ICAR plans, undertakes,aids,promotes and coordinate education, research and its application in agriculture, animal science,fisheries,agro-forestry, and allied sciences.
  • ICAR act as a clearinghouse for research and information relating to; agriculture, and allied sciences. This is done through its publications and information system and instituting and promoting the transfer of technology programs.
  • ICAR provides, undertakes, and promotes consultancy services in the field of research, education, training, and dissemination of information in agriculture, animal science, fisheries, agroforestry, home science, and other allied sciences.
  • ICAR looks into the problems relating to broader areas of rural development concerning agriculture, including post-harvest technology by developing cooperative programs.
  • ICAR does other things that are considered necessary to attain the objectives of the society.
  • As of July 2006, it has developed a vaccine against bird flu. The vaccine was developed at the High-Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal, the only facility in the country to conduct tests for the H5N1 variant of bird flu.
  • It was entrusted with the task of developing a vaccine by the ICAR after the Avian Influenza outbreak in February. The ICAR was provided Rs. 8 Crores for the purpose.
  • In December 2009, ICAR announced that it was considering a policy to provide open access to its research.
  • In March 2010, ICAR made its two flagship journals as Open Access Journals.
  • On 13 September 2013, it announced the Open Access Policy and committed for making all the public funded scholarly research outputs openly available via open access repositories.
  • ICAR scientists were the first in the world to sequence the pigeon pea genome. It was a purely indigenous effort by 31 scientists led by Nagendra Kumar Singh of NRCPB. The first draft of the sequence was published in J. Plant Biochem. Biotechnol.

  • ICAR Award for Outstanding Multidisciplinary Team Research in Agriculture and Allied Sciences
  • National Krishi Vigyan Kendra Award
  • Dr. Rajendra Prasad Puruskar for Technical Books in Hindi in The Field of Agriculture and Allied Sciences
  • Udyan Pandit Award for excellence in fruit growing.
