  • "We shared the view that the withdrawal of foreign troops should be conducted in an orderly and responsible manner in order to ensure a smooth transition," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a press conference in Islamabad with his Pakistani and Afghan counterparts.

  • Kabul has been terrorized by deadly bombings even after Washington and the insurgents reached an agreement "in principle" that would see the US pull thousands of troops from Afghanistan in return for various Taliban security promises.

  • A day-long bandh by the Valmiki community against the telecast of a controversial TV serial provoked incidents of violence in parts of Punjab on Saturday in which a man was shot at in Jalandhar.

  • The bandh, called by the Valmiki Action Committee against the TV serial ''Ram Siya Ke Luv Kush'', threw life out of gear as markets remained largely shut.

  • The Committee claims the serial contained derogatory remarks and distorted "historical facts", thereby hurting their religious sentiment.

  • It demands the serial's telecast be banned countrywide and its director and cast arrested under the Indian Penal Code for deliberately intending to outrage religious feelings.
AFSPA Extended In Assam For 6 Months, Effective From August 28

  • The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has been extended for six months in Assam effective from August 28 after reviewing the law and order situation in the state, a government release said.

  • The act which empowers security forces to conduct operations, arrest anyone anywhere without prior notice has been continuing in Assam since November 1990.

  • The declaration was made under Section 3 of the AFPSA by the state home and political department, the release said.
