  • Russia and Ukraine swapped dozens of prisoners on Saturday in a carefully-negotiated rapprochement that brought Western praise and could thaw a freeze in relations since Moscow’s annexation of the Crimea region in 2014.

  • While the exchange of 35 prisoners on each side could help rebuild confidence between Moscow and Kyiv and allow them to start talking seriously over other issues including a conflict in east Ukraine, full normalization is a long way off.

  • Following lengthy talks, a Russian aircraft carrying freed prisoners from Kiev landed in Moscow while a Ukrainian plane with its released prisoners touched down in Kiev.

  • The request follows a wave of insurgent attacks that sparked concerns of a hasty US pullout.

  • “We shared the view that the withdrawal of foreign troops should be conducted in an orderly and responsible manner in order to ensure a smooth transition,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a press conference in Islamabad with his Pakistani and Afghan counterparts.

  • Kabul has been terrorized by deadly bombings even after Washington and the insurgents reached an agreement “in principle” that would see the US pull thousands of troops from Afghanistan in return for various Taliban security promises.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his government was working tirelessly to ensure no family remains without an LPG connection, adding the target to provide 8 crore such connections was achieved seven months before the target date.

  • “We have marked the ahead-of-date achievement of 8 crores LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. This has been achieved seven months ahead of the target date,” he said.

  • A day-long bandh by the Valmiki community against the telecast of a controversial TV serial provoked incidents of violence in parts of Punjab on Saturday in which a man was shot at in Jalandhar.

  • The bandh, called by the Valmiki Action Committee against the TV serial ”Ram Siya Ke Luv Kush”, threw life out of gear as markets remained largely shut.

  • The Committee claims the serial contained derogatory remarks and distorted “historical facts”, thereby hurting their religious sentiment.

  • It demands the serial’s telecast be banned countrywide and its director and cast arrested under the Indian Penal Code for deliberately intending to outrage religious feelings.

AFSPA Extended In Assam For 6 Months, Effective From August 28

  • The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has been extended for six months in Assam effective from August 28 after reviewing the law and order situation in the state, a government release said.

  • The act which empowers security forces to conduct operations, arrest anyone anywhere without prior notice has been continuing in Assam since November 1990.

  • The declaration was made under Section 3 of the AFPSA by the state home and political department, the release said.

  • The legal veteran died at 7:45 am, his son Mahesh Jethmalani said.

  • Mr. Jethmalani, a six-time Rajya Sabha member, served as a Union Minister in the United Front and the BJP-led NDA governments.

  • He was a minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet in 1998 and then again in October 1999. However, he quit the Vajpayee government in July 2000.
