• One US military service member and two contractors were killed in an Islamist attack on a military base in Kenya.


• Islamist militant group al-Shabab attacked the base, used by Kenyan and US forces, in the popular coastal region of Lamu.


• The US military said in a statement that two others from the Department of Defense were wounded.

• A celebrated Japanese sushi businessman, nicknamed “Tuna King”, paid USD 1.8 million for a giant tuna at New Year’s auction at Tokyo’s main fish market.


• Kiyoshi Kimura, who runs a successful sushi restaurant chain, paid 193 million yen (USD 1.8 million) to purchase a 276-kilogram (608-pound) bluefin tuna, caught off the Aomori region in northern Japan.

• India reached out to the US and Iran to discuss its concerns over the situation in West Asia following the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in an American airstrike, with external affairs minister S Jaishankar saying developments had taken a “very serious turn”.

• The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry sought an immediate report from JNU Registrar Pramod Kumar about the law and order situation in the varsity’s campus after masked men armed with sticks attacked students and teachers and vandalized property there.

• JEE Main January 2020 begins today. The examination will conclude on January 9, 2020. The test is being held in two-shifts every day and in computer-based mode.


• As per data released by National Testing Agency (NTA), the organizing authority for the exam, 11,18,673 candidates registered for the JEE Main exam.


• Out of these, 9,21,261 have registered for B.E. and B.Tech., 1,38,409 candidates registered for B.Arch., and 59,003 candidates registered for B.Planning.

• NEET UG 2020 registration will conclude today. Students will be allowed to complete the payment process till tomorrow, January 7, 2020. After today, there will be no extension in the NEET application process.


• After the application process is over, NTA will allow applicants to make corrections, if required, in their NEET UG application forms. The edit option will be available from January 15 till January 31, 2020.

• States might be facing a consolidated revenue gap of up to Rs 1.23 lakh crore on account of withdrawal of compensation after the five-year GST transition period ends on June 30, 2022, says a report by economic think tank NIPFP.


• At the time of implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1, 2017, the Centre had promised to compensate states for loss of revenue for five years at an agreed formula.

• The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is likely to lower interest rate by 15-25 basis points, lowering salaried workers' returns on their investments, Mint reports.


• In 2018-19, the retirement fund manager had set the rate of 8.65 percent for its subscribers after seven months of discussion with the finance ministry, the report said.

• Ross Taylor has become New Zealand's leading Test run-scorer, surpassing Stephen Fleming to be touted as the most prolific batsman for the Black Caps in red-ball cricket.


• Taylor achieved the feat on the fourth day of the third and final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground when he hit Nathan Lyon over mid-on for three.

• India all-rounder Irfan Pathan announced on Saturday he will be retiring from professional cricket with immediate effect.


• Irfan Pathan, who made his international debut in 2003, played professional cricket for 16 years. Despite not featuring in an international fixture since 2012, Irfan was playing domestic cricket until February 2019.
