British Airways Pilots Begin Two-Day Global Strike Over Pay

  • British Airways (BA) faced its first global strike by pilots on Monday and the possibility of almost all its flights being grounded for two days.

  • The UK flag carrier and its 4,300 pilots have been locked in a nine-month pay dispute that could disrupt or alter the travel plans of nearly 300,000 people.

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government urged both sides Friday, "to get around the table and sort this out".

  • But BA only upped the stakes by reportedly threatening to strip pilots and their families of free travel perks if the strike action goes ahead.

  • Trump said he had invited Taliban leaders and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani for talks at the Camp David presidential retreat on a draft deal that would see the United States withdraw thousands of troops and wind down its longest-ever war.

HP Police recruitment - Over 38,000 takes exam

  • Almost a month after the Himachal Pradesh government cancelled the examination for the recruitment of constables in the state police following the arrest of people impersonating as candidates, over 38,000 took the reconducted test.

  • The examination was re-conducted after six men from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana were caught impersonating as candidates at a test center in Parol area of Kangra district on August 12.

  • Later, more arrests were made. A total of 38,277 candidates appeared for the one-hour test, an official said, adding that of 39,259 candidates, 1,032 did not take the examination.

Muthoot Finance denies move to close down branches outside Kerala

  • Gold loan lender Muthoot Finance, which is bearing the brunt of the strike by a section of workers in Kerala, has scotched rumours of closing down of its branches outside the State, saying that “such reports are purely untrue, baseless and with mala fide intention by some unethical players”.
